“It is an obsession to take inanimate materials such as paint, and shape it into a face that embodies a human soul …”
Salman Khoshroo is a multidisciplinary Iranian artist recognized for his emotionally expressive paintings and innovative sculptures. He spent his childhood in New York before returning intermittently to Iran. He later studied at the Australian National University, where he earned a degree in Digital Art. Originally drawn to photography, Khoshroo began painting in 2009 as a self-taught artist. In 2021, he completed the MFA Fine Art program at Goldsmiths, University of London. He now works between London and Tehran.
Khoshroo's figurative paintings explore psychological and emotional states through a wide range of techniques. His work moves from bold palette-knife applications that verge on abstraction to delicate, softly brushed portraits focusing on subtle details of clothing and gesture. His early interest in photography sharpened his attention to composition and character.
In parallel with his painting practice, Khoshroo creates sculptures using unconventional materials such as electrical wires, dyed wool, and most recently, polymer. His Polymer Series reflects his ongoing investigation into the expressive potential of materials. By mixing thick globs of tinted polymer into a pliable substance, he sculpts gestural busts that suggest the human form with minimal strokes. As he describes it, “I search for materials with interesting behaviors that embody a certain kind of empathetic physical feel. This material is very gestural on its own: The pieces dance and wrestle with this sticky substance to shape it into its final human forms.”
Khoshroo has exhibited his work internationally in cities such as Tehran, Cairo, and Paris. Through a continuous process of experimentation and a strong emotional presence in his art, he has established himself as a compelling voice in contemporary figurative practice.
