CARLES CONGOST - Real Enough
Artericambi
7 days left
Carles Congost (Olot, Spain, 1970) returns to Artericambi with "Real Enough", his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery.
The time elapsed since his last presentation at Artericambi has allowed the artist to further refine some of the distinctive features of his work, both formal and conceptual, while also nurturing his genuine interest in pop music.
The artist's approach to this musical genre is manifested, on one hand, in the practice itself, carried out through the composition, writing, and production of songs; and on the other hand, through critical analysis and biographical speculation. Both dynamics have been naturally incorporated into his artistic practice.
Over the past decade, Congost has undertaken a series of projects of varying scope that link his interest in music with experimental video artwork.

Black Hole
The diptych Black Hole (2024), part of the same series, is a hybrid that blends photography and sculpture. The portrait created by the two photographs alludes to the design of the front and back cover of a fictitious record, enabling the artist to turn the photographic image into a semantic play full of allusions and resonances.

Mambo
The photograph Mambo (2022) features a young model mid-pirouette with a basketball, set against a backdrop evoking the Memphis Group, geometric Art Deco, and 1960s Pop Art. Every element—architecture, costume, and props—holds symbolic meaning. A small basketball hoop at the center transforms the scene into a stylized youth tournament, subtly highlighting how images can reframe the ordinary and infuse it with new cultural significance.

Abans de la casa/ Un biopic inestable a través del sonido Sabadell
The video Abans de la casa/Un biopic inestable a través del sonido Sabadell, presented within a set inspired by the Sabadell sound, a Catalan variant of 1980s Italodisco known for disguising its local origins through clever marketing. Rather than a traditional documentary, the work offers a fragmented, associative narrative exploring the aesthetics and cultural context of the era. Featuring interviews, reenactments, performances and music reflects on the period’s artistic and political climate.

Memorabilia
The photograph Memorabilia (Reverse side of a coaster from the Cóncor nightclub in Sabadell with drink stains dated 1985) (2023) serves as an allegory for nostalgia for one's youth while simultaneously providing an ironic counterpoint to the video. It presents, in an abstract and minimally illustrative manner, a piece of memorabilia acquired in an online auction, belonging to an iconic leisure space closely associated with the Sabadell sound.
